Thursday Psalms: Jesus Restores Your Soul!

The Psalm assigned for Sunday is the most beloved and well-known of all the psalms.  It is a perfect companion to Sunday's gospel reading, the first ten verses of John chapter 10.  For most of us, there are many memories and beautiful revelations from God in these verses, but today I'd like to look at verses 3a and 6a.

PSALM 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

     He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.

     He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

     I will fear no evil, for You are with me;

         Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

     You anoint my head with oil;

         my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

     and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

One's soul is not easy to describe in words, at least for me.  Of course, "googling it" produces this definition:  "The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being... regarded as immortal."  That God restores our souls is one of His great promises, given over & over, throughout God's Word.  Our sins and our sinfulness are constantly separating us from God, and without God's intervention, we are doomed & hopeless, both now and forever.

But God DID intervene, by sending Jesus, His Son to become a human being.  Jesus lived a perfect & sinless life, then died on Calvary's cross and took the punishment of all sins upon Himself.  Jesus paid your debt, Jesus purchased your forgiveness by giving His body & blood, dying a criminal's death on the cross.  And so, God lets us participate in "the Great Exchange":  when you confess your sins, God forgives you, removes your sins, and restores you to Himself.  Because of Jesus, God restores your soul!

This is not an idle or flimsy promise!  God's Word proclaims this to be true, over & over again.  It is a "sure thing", as verse 6a declares:  surely, goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life.  In this, God does not promise each of our days will be filled with earthly comfort or happiness.  It is His goodness and mercy which will follow us, His forgiveness and salvation He gives to us all the days of your life.

Thanks be to God, that Jesus restores your soul, all the days of your life!

Peace in Christ,

The Third Sunday of Easter

April 23, 2023

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our 10:30 am Worship Service.  Afterward, we gathered for food, conversations, and Adult Bible study, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

Here is information about today's worship service:

SCRIPTURE READINGS
   First Reading:   Acts 2:14a, 36–41
               Psalm:  Psalm 116:1–14
              Epistle:  1 Peter 1:17–25
              Gospel:  Luke 24:13–35

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Today we join the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, looking sad because they had hoped Jesus was the one to redeem Israel.   They had been with Jesus, hearing His teaching and observing His miracles, yet still Him they did not see.  Even after Jesus had revealed the Scriptures to them, their eyes remained closed.

You’ve arrived here today, like at Emmaus, with closed & squinting eyes, sometimes at least not seeing Jesus.  And yet today, like He continuously does, Jesus reveals Himself to you, Jesus opens your eyes, Jesus makes Himself known to all of us!

Thursday Psalms: The LORD Delivers You!

When were you last "scared to death"?  Of course, this is a phrase we most often use as a figure of speech and not literally.  However, some of us have been very sick or suffered a crisis in which we truly feared for our lives.  Perhaps you are in this very place today.   In these verses of Psalm 116, the psalmist describes his experiences during times like these, both his struggles and the Lord's responses.

PSALM 116:1-9

     I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.

Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.

The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;

     I suffered distress and anguish.

Then I called on the name of the Lord:  “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, He saved me.

Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears,

     my feet from stumbling;

I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Perhaps today your snarespangsdistress and anguish come from physical pain or suffering.  Perhaps your distress is emotional, perhaps your stumbling into sin has harmed yourself and others around you.  Of course, we all share the guilt & shame from stumbling into the snares of sin.  When we are brought low by the guilt & shame of our sins, we often make several attempts to fix ourselves.  How often do we deny, hide or cover up our sins?  How often do we try to compensate for our sinful actions by doing a greater amount of "good" things?  How often do we simply ignore our sins and try to convince ourselves they're "no big deal"?  All of us eventually try these & other things, but they do no good.  Nothing we can do will make us "right with God" or with our conscience.

However, in today's psalm we find truly GOOD NEWS, the only good news regarding our sins.  Verse four tells us exactly what to do, and how to do it!  We call out to the Lord, confessing our sins and pleading He deliver our souls.   Verse 5 tells us WHY the Lord desires our prayers of confession;  He is gracious, righteous & merciful!  In John 3:16 Jesus tells us "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."  John 3:16

Jesus loves YOU so much, He took the punishment of all your sins upon Himself when He died on Calvary's horrid cross.  Because of His bountiful love for you, your soul can be at rest (v7)!  Because of Jesus' resurrection from death on the first Easter morning, He has delivered your soul from death also (v8)!  When we confess our sins, we receive God's forgiveness, our sins are removed and our relationship with Him is fully restored!

Thanks be to God for saving us, and allowing us to walk before the Lord in the land of the living!

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mark

             Epistle:  1 Peter 1:3–9
             Gospel:  John 20:19–31

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Second to Jesus, His disciple Thomas is the best-known participant in our Gospel text for today.  In fact, this text was so valued by the church fathers, it is assigned for this Sunday in all three years of the common lectionary and in the one-year lectionary!  Throughout the Christian church on earth, lots of folks today are hearing of Thomas!
Our focus will be more directly on Jesus, and the priceless gift He gives to His disciples and to us.  Jesus gives His peace, even though we doubt!

Thursday Psalms: In God I Trust!

Today I deviate a bit from our normal psalm selection, choosing Psalm 56 as we come down from our glorious celebrations of our Lord's resurrection.  From Sunday's emotional mountain-top of praising and giving all our glory to God, we're back into our regular times of struggle.  David's prayer in this psalm calls out to God to save him from all kinds of oppression and attack.

We believe David wrote this psalm having been chased by Saul [who was trying to kill him] into the Philistine city of Gath.  David had killed many Philistine warriors, and he feared they would recognize him and kill him in return.  David's enemies were very much made of flesh & blood!  Our enemies may not be so human, but they certainly also include sickness, the devil & his temptations, and our own sinful natures.

But our good news today comes from reading this psalm through the lens of Easter, and the great victory over death won for us by Jesus.  Find in this psalm the resurrection language and the promise of confident, holy life.

Psalm 56  In God I Trust
Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;
    all day long an attacker oppresses me;
my enemies trample on me all day long,
    for many attack me proudly.
When I am afraid,
    I put my trust in You.
In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
          What can flesh do to me?
All day long they injure my cause;
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
They stir up strife, they lurk;
    they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.
For their crime will they escape?
    In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!
You have kept count of my tossings;
    put my tears in Your bottle.
          Are they not in your book?
Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call.
    This I know, that God is for me.
10  In God, whose word I praise,
      in the Lord, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
          What can man do to me?
12 I must perform my vows to You, O God;
          I will render thank offerings to You.
13  For You have delivered my soul from death,
          yes, my feet from falling,

    that I may walk before God in the light of life.

What verses did you find?  I noticed several:  the end of verse four, the end of verse 11, and the strongest resurrection reminder in the first phrase in verse 13.  "For You have delivered my soul from death..."  What a powerful gift Jesus won for us and gives to us!

And another piece of good news:  "...that I may walk before God in the light of life."    Because of what Jesus has done for us, we can walk confidently in His love and protection, no matter what enemies trample, oppress or attack us!  Our forgiven and saved lives can be summarized in verses 3-4:  "When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.  ...in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.  What can flesh do to me?"

Give thanks to our God, in Whom we trust, and Who gives us strength to not be afraid!

Good Friday Tenebrae Vespers

April 7, 2023

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

Today is Good Friday, when we stand on Golgotha and gaze upon our crucified Lord.  The image and example of sheep is used powerfully throughout the holy Scriptures, most often to describe our typical human behavior and our total reliance on Jesus to be our Good Shepherd.  God’s prophet Isaiah makes a common and complete observation about us in today’s Old Testament text:  “All we like sheep have gone astray…”

But today is Good Friday, where our focus is only secondarily on our wandering ways.  Our primary focus is on Jesus, the perfect Sacrifice, given to pay the price of our sins.  Isaiah continues:  “…and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” and  “…by His wounds, we are healed.”

SCRIPTURE READINGS
     Old Testament:  Isaiah 52:13–53:12
                  Psalm:  Psalm 22
                 Epistle:  Hebrews 4:14–16, 5:7–9
                 Gospel:  John 18:1–19:42

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings, especially this coming Easter Sunday!  We have two worship services and a free Easter breakfast in between:
    Easter Sunrise worship service at 8:30 am
    Easter Breakfast & Fellowship from 9:45am - 10:45am
    Easter Day worship service at 11:00am

Maundy Thursday

April 6, 2023

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

Today we celebrate Maundy Thursday, most well-known as a commemoration of our Savior’s initiation of holy communion.  Ironically, the name “Maundy” came from the Latin translation of John 13:34, a verse in today’s gospel reading:  “Mandatum novum do vobis” [“a new commandment I give to you”].

This new commandment is to love one another, as Jesus has loved us.  Jesus demonstrated His love for His disciples in the simple action of washing their feet, which points to so much more.  Jesus gives to us the ultimate & greatest love:  Jesus laid down His life on Calvary’s cross to forgive you all your sins.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
   Old Testament:  Exodus 12:1–14
        Psalm:  Psalm 116:12–19
       Epistle:  1 Corinthians 11:23–32
       Gospel:  John 13:1–17, 31–35
