Pilgrim Worship Sunday September 19, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 19, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,
Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
Old Testament:  Jeremiah 11:18–20
             Psalm:  Psalm 54
            Epistle:  James 3:13–4:10
            Gospel:  Mark 9:30–37

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
There is a war going on.  It is quite evident in the outward conflicts within society.  And, as Jeremiah and David realized, the world has warred against people of faith throughout history.  But in today’s Epistle, James reveals that the struggle continues within each of us.  Our passions are often opposed to God.  Our Lord Jesus, by His death and resurrection, has won the victory—and therefore, peace—over outward and inward warfare.  His grace assures us of daily and eternal peace.

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 12, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,
Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:  Isaiah 50:4–10
               Psalm:   Psalm 116:1–9
              Epistle:  James 3:1–12
              Gospel:  Mark 9:14–29

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
In the Gospel, Jesus encounters another person possessed by an unclean spirit.  The young man’s father is distraught and desperate.  The father uses his tongue to plead with Jesus: “I believe; help my unbelief!”  Jesus does help the man’s unbelief by healing his son.  Jesus helps our unbelief as well in all that He does.  In His miracles and teaching, suffering and death, resurrection and ascension, Jesus calls us to faith.  And He calls us to be His witnesses.

Pilgrim Worship Sunday September 5, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 5, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,
Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
Old Testament:   Isaiah 35:4–7a
             Psalm:   Psalm 146
            Epistle:   James 2:1–10, 14–18
            Gospel:   Mark 7:24–30

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
In the Epistle for today, James the brother of Jesus our Lord sternly condemns the sins of partiality & favoritism among Christians in worship.  We don’t have a seating problem at Pilgrim, do we?
James then asks a challenging question “What good is it...?” and answers:  “…faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”  What is the health of our faith?  Ponder this question and we’ll wrestle together with it during the sermon.

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 29, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,
Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:   Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–9
               Psalm:   Psalm 119:129–136
              Epistle:   Ephesians 6:10–20
              Gospel:   Mark 7:14–23

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
Know your enemy!  I’m sure you can think of many enemies, from your nosey neighbor to cancer or dementia which is stealing life from someone you love.  Who or what is at the root of all our enemies?  In Sunday's Epistle lesson, Paul speaks of the devil, our evil enemy from outside of us.  In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of an enemy INSIDE of us; out of our heart comes what defiles us.  Know your enemy!  We will explore these ideas and realize again:  it’s most important to Know your Savior!
