The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 22, 2021

              Epistle:  Ephesians 5:6–21
             Gospel:  John 6:60–69
     Sermon text:  John 12:20-28

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
Each of our readings today speak of the world’s rejection of God’s Word, John’s gospel includes even some disciples walk away from Jesus.  Paul observes “the days are evil…”, and they still are today.  What should be the Christian’s response?  Paul encourages us to “make the best use of the time” and Peter is spot-on:  “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Where shall we go?  Of course, we go to Jesus and receive all the gifts He gives to us.  But where shall we go in our communities?  How and who should we invite to Come See Jesus?

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
Today is the 3rd and final service in our “Bread of Life” series, in which we’re focusing on three promises Jesus gives in the sixth chapter of John’s gospel account.  Jesus, the Bread of Life SATISFIES, He RAISES and this week we will hear how the Bread of Life ABIDES.  This third promise is the most personal & intimate; it speaks of what Jesus does IN us.

Pilgrim Lutheran Worship, Sunday August 8, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

August 8, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton, Michigan,

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR AUGUST 8th
  Old Testament:  1 Kings 19:1-8
               Psalm:   Psalm 34:1-8
              Epistle:   Ephesians 4:17 - 5:2
              Gospel:   John 6:35-51

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Today is the second of three sermons working through the "Bread of Life" discourse in John 6.  We spend lots of our time hungering, thirsting & grumbling as we stumble through our lives.  Last Sunday we talked about how the Bread of Life satisfies both our physical & spiritual needs.  In the text for today, Jesus tells us again how He comes to us, so we can come to Him!  Believe in Me, Jesus says, and I will raise you up!  But what about today?  What can we learn from God's Word about our hungry, thirsty & grumble-worthy lives today?

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 1, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton, Michigan,

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR AUGUST 1st
  Old Testament:   Exodus 16:2–15
               Psalm:   Psalm 145:10–21
              Epistle:   Ephesians 4:1–16
              Gospel:   John 6:22–35

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Two Sundays ago, we studied Jesus’ great bread miracle, feeding thousands with 5 loaves of bread and two fish.  Today we will begin a three-week sermon series based on the Bread of Life discourse in John 6.  Just like the crowds chasing & pressing around Jesus, we chase after earthly bread.  We work harder for “the food that perishes” instead of “the food that endures”, which Jesus gives to us.  By God’s grace, we can stop this chasing & working, because the Bread of Life is what really satisfies.
