Pilgrim Worship Sunday June 26, 2022

 Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 26, 2022

We're glad & thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our 10:30 am Worship Service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us for any or all of these weekly events!

Here is information about todays worship service:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS SERVICE
   Old Testament: 1 Kings 19:9b–21
               Epistle:  Galatians 5:1, 13–25
               Gospel:  Luke 9:51–62

OUR THEME FOR THIS SERVICE
The world in which we live is fast-paced and information-overloaded, with far more things demanding attention than we can possibly even understand.  As a result, we well understand the danger of distractions.  We’re constantly tempted to look this way or that, to attend to this shiny new object or another, and we neglect other things which are much more important.  We know the consequences of distractions can be deadly.

In Sunday's gospel text, Jesus and His followers confront several distraction examples.  Like them, we spend much of our lives standing at the intersection of distraction and discipleship.  Follow Me, Jesus invites, but so often we follow the bright and shiny distractions down other roads.  How does God help us in these choices?

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 19, 2022

We're glad & thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our 10:30 am Worship Service.  Afterward, we gathered for food, conversations, and an adult Bible class, in which we're studying Revelation, one of the most fascinating books of the Bible.  If you'd like to watch a video of this Bible Study, please contact Pastor Mark.  Children also gathered for Sunday School, which we present every Sunday for children of all ages.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us for any or all of these great events!

Here is information about todays worship service:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR TODAY
  Old Testament:  Isaiah 65:1–9
               Psalm:  Psalm 3
               Epistle:  Galatians 3:23–4:7
              Gospel:  Luke 8:26–39

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
As confessional Lutheran Christians, we talk a lot about baptism.  We confess in our small catechism:  “Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God’s command and combined with God’s word.  It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.”

In today’s Epistle text, what does it mean for us when St. Paul says those of us who’ve been “baptized into Christ have put on Christ”?  Paul uses the images of being slaves, sons, and heirs to describe the wonderful gifts God gives to us.  We understand these ideas, but is there another way we understand the importance of our baptisms in our daily lives?

Pilgrim Worship Holy Trinity Sunday June 12, 2022

The Holy Trinity

June 12, 2022

SCRIPTURE READINGS
  Old Testament:  Proverbs 8:1–4, 22–31
               Psalm:  Psalm 8
               Epistle:  Acts 2:14a, 22–36
              Gospel:  John 8:48–59

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Today is The Holy Trinity Sunday, which ushers in the half of the church year reflecting the work the Lord is doing in His people, His Church.  Today’s readings certainly reflect the persons and work of the Trinity.  Solomon sings a poem of Wisdom, the Holy Spirit.  In his Pentecost sermon, St. Peter reminds his hearers it was the Father’s plan they crucified His Son, whom He raised from the dead and who on that day poured out the Holy Spirit upon them.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus forcefully argues about fatherhood with His Jewish attackers.  Refusing to accept that Jesus is God, they shout their cynical question:  “Who do you make yourself out to be?”  This is the most important question of human existence, spanning all time and place.  Jesus answers both directly and more subtly, which gives you and I great encouragement and peace.

The Day of Pentecost

June 5, 2022

We're glad & thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

                Psalm:  Psalm 143
                Epistle:  Acts 2:1–21
               Gospel:  John 14:23–31

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
Flashbacks, remembering specific times or events in our lives often give us new perspectives on the past, present and what might be in the future.  Flashbacks can be a fun part of our lives, or sometimes they can uncover painful or difficult memories. Today, The Day of Pentecost is a flashback in many ways.  In each of the Scripture readings for today, we see how remembering God’s faithfulness strengthens us for today and gives us joyful courage for the future.  As we look at the world around us, we’re shocked how quickly our culture has rejected and abandoned God.  Perhaps you feel abandoned by God, left alone to fend for yourself.  Today, Jesus gives you and me an astounding promise, one which strengthens and encourages us!
