Pilgrim Worship Sunday July 25, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

July 25, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton, Michigan,

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR JULY 25TH
  Old Testament:   Genesis 9:8–17
               Psalm:   Psalm 136:1–9
              Epistle:   Ephesians 3:14–21
              Gospel:   Mark 6:45–56

THEME & IDEAS FROM THE SERMON

Think of a time when you were misunderstood or had wrong expectations placed upon you.  Living up to the expectations of others is often impossible.  People have always expected Jesus to be and do things which were not part of His mission.  What kind of Jesus do you want?  Does the Jesus you need match your expectations?  What kind of Jesus does our family at Pilgrim want & need?

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

July 18, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton, Michigan,

We were blessed to gather earlier today at Pilgrim, to receive God's gifts and respond in humble praise & thanksgiving.  In the sermon we considered the Gospel lesson, best known for Jesus' miraculous feeding of over 5000 people from five small loaves and two fish.  Did you know that the loaves were likely from barley and were small, more like a biscuit?  Barely was less expensive and thus the more typical food of the poor residents of this area.  And the fish were likely "salt fish", about the size of sardines?  There is another teaching in these two facts; Jesus often accomplished great things for HIs kingdom, using what the world would consider the simplest and lowest things!

Anyway, in the sermon we developed this idea:
JESUS' POWER, GIVEN TO US, BRINGS LIFE TO DESOLATE PLACES.
Give it a listen, and think about desolate places in your life where God has brought life and where you might pray that He will do so.

Worship at Pilgrim, Sunday July 11, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

July 11, 2021

Earlier today we gathered for worship at Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
The Gospel reading for today sounds like an advertisement for some movie or Netflix show; it’s not really polite dinner conversation.  But that's OK, real people like you and me live lives that are messy and full of real sins.  We need exactly what we have:  real salvation & forgiveness, won for us by Jesus Christ on Calvary's cross.  Many of our sin stories are sordid and disgusting like Herod's, but Christ died to redeem all sinners; including Herod, you and me!  Thanks be to God for His gifts of salvation & forgiveness!

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

July 4, 2021

Earlier today we celebrated Independence Day at Pilgrim Lutheran Church.  No fireworks or speeches about the Good Ol' USA.  We celebrated a different and more important independence.  You and I have been set free from our sins by Jesus!  We are no longer captives, we are no longer slaves!  Jesus took your punishment onto Himself and set you free.

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
In our Epistle lesson, Paul gives almost no details about the “thorn in the flesh” given to him, “a messenger of Satan to harass” him.  There are several other examples in Scripture of similar situations; perhaps you and I can also be included.  Together we will explore this statement:  God has a purpose for your pain.  Yes, He has a loving purpose and gives us strength to endure!

If you watched this service live on Facebook or our website, I'm curious how it went for you.  Please feel free to share your reactions and experiences.
