The Third Sunday of Easter

April 18, 2021

Dear friends and family members of Pilgrim-Burton,

“Peace to you.”  These are words Jesus spoke to His disciples as they huddled in fear, locked up in a room in Jerusalem on Easter Sunday night.  Jesus does it again; He just shows up and brings comfort and peace to His children.  That's you and me, too!  The Gospel reading for today is Luke's account, who doesn't record anything about Thomas who we met and spoke about last Sunday.  Luke focuses on the humanity of Jesus, the human reality of His physical body and Him being alive again.  Jesus does it again; He just shows up and gives us His peace.  We are witnesses, too!  In God's true and perfect Word, we see how God kept His salvation promise in the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus.  Thanks be to God!

The Incredulity of St. Thomas     Carravagio   1601-1602

The Second Sunday of Easter

April 11, 2021     10:30 am

We worship together, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
Based on the gospel reading, today seems to be all about dear Thomas, the disciple who doubted.  However, ALL the disciples doubted, and so do you and I.  In His amazing love, Jesus did not criticize His disciples, but gave them His peace.  The same is true for you and for me!  Come and see, how Jesus takes us from fear to joy, and then sends us off to live joyful lives, free of sin, doubt, and fear!
What a joyful morning, worshiping the Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!  Please click HERE to view the worship service.  We're still working on making the video more smooth and easier to watch!

Praying God’s blessings on you and your family this week,

Holy [Maundy] Thursday Worship

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

Welcome, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

All of our mid-week worship services during the season of Lent have been organized under God's invitation to us:  “Return to the Lord your God for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:13b).

Today is Holy Thursday, often and perhaps better known as Maundy Thursday.  But what does this word "Maundy" mean, from where did this tradition come?  Maundy originates from the Latin word mandatum, often translated as a "commandment".  From mandatum we also get "mandate" or rule.  In the context of Holy Week and Jesus' passion, we see Jesus giving two new commandments to His disciples on this day.

First, this comes to mind in the context of John 13, where Jesus demonstrates selfless love and service by washing His disciples' feet.  After exposing Judas as His betrayer and Judas' departure, Jesus gives us a new mandatum in verse 34:  "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another:  just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another."  Second, as Jesus established the sacrament of holy communion, twice He commanded them (and us!) "This do, in remembrance of Me."  In both of these events, which have been celebrated in Christ's Church throughout the centuries, we hear Jesus giving these new commands to His people.

Click on the link below and celebrate Maundy Thursday, which is most certainly holy (set apart) from all other Thursdays!  While we did not wash anyone's feet, we certainly celebrated and shared the amazing Feast, the blessed sacrament of Holy Communion.  The theme for our service and sermon is:  Return to the Table.  We will unpack this idea:  None of us deserve a seat at Jesus' table, but we certainly belong there!

Praying God’s blessings on you and your family this week,
