Sunday of the Passion

March 28, 2021

We worship together, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.
OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
We know and love today as Palm Sunday, experiencing again Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  You may also know today as “Sunday of the Passion”, with suggested Gospel readings spanning the coming week’s events.  In both cases, we see Jesus continuing to do and be what is not expected:  He enters and departs Jerusalem this week in humility with very unexpected fanfare.  Then and now, Jesus is not the king the devil, the world or our sinful natures want Him to be.  St. John includes one verse in our Gospel reading today, unique to John’s account, which invites us to reflect on our Savior and His week of passion.

Lent worship at Pilgrim, Wednesday March 24, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

Welcome, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

All of our mid-week worship services during the season of Lent have been organized under God's invitation to us:  “Return to the Lord your God for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:13b).

This service is our final Wednesday evening worship service during this season of Lent.  Our theme for tonight is "Return to the Kingdom of God".

So, what exactly is "the Kingdom of God"?  How do we get there, how do we Return?  In the sermon we will answer these questions and explore how our loving and caring God makes this theme a joyful invitation, not a hard command.  No matter what your situation in life, God's invitation is for you, and can bring you great comfort!  Watch this service, and receive the gifts God has for you!

Lent Wednesday Worship at Pilgrim, March 17, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

Greetings, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

All of our mid-week worship services during the season of Lent are organized under God's invitation to us:  “Return to the Lord your God for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:13b).

This worship service follows the theme "Return from Denial".  We will sit with Peter in the courtyard as he watches his Lord and Master being wrongfully accused.  What an eventful few days it had been for the disciples, even just this day!  What might Peter have been thinking?  What thoughts might you have in a similar situation?

In this way, perhaps we're not that different from Peter; we often deny Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  But here is the really good news:  Jesus did not deny you or me on Calvary's cross!  He suffered and died as the perfect and final sacrifice for all sins, yours and mine included.  By the faith given to you in baptism, you became a loved child of God and Jesus exclaims to His Father that you are His!

Thanks be to God that by Jesus, all our sins, including our sins of denial were nailed to the blood-soaked cross and are forgiven!

Bible readings for this service:
     Isaiah 59:1-3, 12-13
     1 Peter 5:6-10
     Luke 22:54-62

Sunday worship at Pilgrim, March 14th

“The Brazen Serpent”      Charles le Brun          about 1650

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

We worship together, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Greetings to each of you on this Lord's day, March 14, 2021!

The Scripture readings for today
Old Testament   Numbers 21:4–9
            Epistle   Ephesians 2:1–10
           Gospel   John 3:14–21
             Psalm   Psalm 107:1–9

Theme for the service & sermon
In the Epistle reading today, Paul takes us on a “roller coaster” ride, plunging head-long into death and being pulled out at the last moment…to life!  Before coming to faith, we were dead in trespasses and sins.  But while we were dead and helpless, God made us alive!  Paul writes that God saved us, “being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us.” But we have not simply been made physically well, like the Israelites in the Old Testament Reading, but we have been given eternal life. The central reason is that “by grace you have been saved through faith.” We are His workmanship and in the light of Christ.  Now that’s really living!

Lenten Worship at Pilgrim, Wednesday March 10, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

We worship together, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

All of our mid-week worship services during the season of Lent are organized under God's invitation to us:  “Return to the Lord your God for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:13b).

Our worship service tonight will follow the theme of "Return from False Witness".  We will follow Jesus as He allows Himself to be subjected to a sham "trial" in front of Caiaphas the high priest with the scribes and elders.  Jesus endured this mockery of justice, including slander, false accusations and physical violence; why?  In part, to set a perfect example for us when we are faced with false testimony from others.  But most importantly, because this was His Father's plan to fulfill all prophecies and to redeem you, me and all sinners.  Jesus is the "Lamb without imperfection" who in a few hours would die an innocent death and be the perfect sacrifice for all of our sins.

Tonight, God calls us repent of false testimony and our other 8th commandment sins, and to Return to Him, from False Witness.

Remember, we will be worshiping in-person every Wednesday in Lent, beginning at 7pm.  Videos of these services will be posted online as quickly as practical following these services.

Greetings to each of you on this Lord's day, March 7, 2021!

The Scripture readings for today

   Old Testament:   Exodus 20:1–17
               Epistle:   1 Corinthians 1:18–31
              Gospel:   John 2:13–22
                Psalm:   Psalm 19

Theme for the service & sermon
Cleaning, organizing, and “sprucing up” are habits for many people each Spring.  With the warmer weather and longer sunlight, are you thinking of “Spring cleaning” whatever “clutter” may have gathered over the past months?  With many of us at home for the past year, the clutter may be more than usual.   In the Gospel text today, is Jesus giving us a good example of “driving out” clutter in our lives?   Perhaps, but does God have more in this text for us to learn?

Lenten Wednesday Pilgrim Worship, March 3, 2021

Pilgrim Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod)

Burton, Michigan

We worship together, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The focus of our worship service tonight is betrayal, but not just Judas' betrayal of Jesus.  All of your sins and all of my sins are betrayals of Jesus Christ, our Savior.  Jesus accepted Judas' betrayal and the betrayal of all people, and took our punishment on the cross of Golgotha.   Thanks be to God, that because of Jesus' faithfulness, you and I are forgiven!
