October 24, 2021

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR TODAY
  Old Testament:  Jeremiah 31:7–9
               Psalm:  Psalm 126
              Epistle:  Hebrews 7:23–28
              Gospel:  Mark 10:46–52

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
We can see Jesus’ earthly ministry as a long, winding road to Jerusalem, ending on Calvary's hideous cross.  Today, Jesus’ road goes through Jericho, His last stop before His final triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  The narrative structure of our church calendar is also winding down and will soon end.   Today, on the side of this road, we will meet Bartimaeus, a beggar whose eyes could see nothing, but whose faith saw Jesus clearly and whose lips proclaimed “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

We can learn a lot from Bartimaeus, about sight, faith and discipleship.  I pray we do, because our eyes lead us away, but faith shows us Jesus, and makes us true disciples.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mark

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:  Ecclesiastes 5:10–20
               Psalm:  Psalm 119:9–16
              Epistle:  Hebrews 4:1–13
              Gospel:  Mark 10:23–31

THE THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
What is most important in your life?  For many of us, money is ultimately the one thing which we value the most.
In the verse just prior to today’s Gospel text, Jesus demanded the “rich young man” sell all that he had and give to the poor.  He "went away sorrowful” and “disheartened”, because he had great wealth,  In today’s Gospel lesson, Jesus continues to challenge and teach us about money and what should be most important in our lives.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mark

The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

October 10, 2021

Dear Friends in Christ Jesus,
Welcome to the Sunday October 10th worship service at  Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Burton, Michigan!

We have started a NEW Bible class on Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper!   If you'd like to watch videos of this study, please contact me.

For today's Children's message and videos from previous Sundays, please click on this link.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR TODAY
Old Testament:   Amos 5:6–7, 10–15
             Psalm:   Psalm 90:12–17
            Epistle:   Hebrews 3:12–19
            Gospel:   Mark 10:17–22

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
What are you seeking?  The prophet Amos proclaims, “seek the LORD and live”!  He then speaks of God’s coming judgement and punishment on those who oppose God, including some of God’s own children who have turned away from good and toward evil.  “Seek good, and not evil, that you may live” Amos proclaims.
The Psalmist encourages us to “number our days”, as we await our Lord’s coming, crying out “How long?”.   St. Mark reveals a rich young man who struggles with a different kind of evil, and a different kind of seeking.  Jesus tells him to seek first the kingdom of God, which was not the answer for which he was hoping.
What are you seeking?  What can we learn from Jesus and this rich young man?

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mark

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 3, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,

Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR TODAY
  Old Testament:  Genesis 2:18–25
               Psalm:  Psalm 128
              Epistle:  Hebrews 2:1–13
              Gospel:  Mark 10:2–16

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
We’ve all heard these words of Jesus, usually during Christian wedding ceremonies:  “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”  Jesus spoke these words in the context of marriage, but I believe it is proper for us to also consider them more widely.  There are many examples within us and around us where “man” continues to separate what God joined together.  Watching the astounding speed at which so many God-joined things are being ripped apart, we quickly come to hopelessness and despair.
Are there things we can do?  Are there any solutions?  Yes!  Come See Jesus!

The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 26, 2021

Dear friends & family of Pilgrim in Burton,

Here is a short summary of our worship service today and the video links are below:

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:   Numbers 11:4–6, 10–16, 24–29
               Psalm:   Psalm 104:27–35
              Epistle:   James 5:7–20
             Gospel:   Mark 9:38–50

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY
We’ve all heard this advice from friends:  “Be careful what you ask [pray] for; you might get it!”  You may have heard others also, some based on Scripture verses:  “Ask and you will receive…”.
In Sunday’s Epistle lesson, James sure makes it sound simple, that God answers our prayers just like we ask them.  Is James telling us that prayer is like a vending machine?  Put in the right things and get what you want?  If so, why are my coins always getting stuck?  Why aren’t my answers given to me?

Together we’ll explore prayer and trust; prayer is the cry of faith, trusting God to act.
