Thursday Psalms: Stand in Awe!

Blessed Thursday to each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, your Savior!

Every week, our worship liturgy follows its yearly journey through the human life of Jesus Christ, simultaneously fully Divine and fully human.  We've reached the final destination of this year's journey, with our focus on the Last Day when Jesus Christ returns to earth to pronounce judgement and salvation over His creation.  With this in mind, the Introit assigned for this coming Last Sunday is given below.

Psalm 134;  antiphon: Psalm 33:8

33:8   Let all the earth fear the Lord;
          let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!

134:1 Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,
          who stand by night in the house of the Lord!

          2 Lift up your hands to the holy place
          and bless the Lord!

          3 May the Lord bless you from Zion,
          He who made heaven and earth!

33:8  Let all the earth fear the Lord;
          let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!

These are songs of praise and honor for the Lord, who made heaven and earth.  Especially today with these words, we stand in awe of God, we fear & honor Him above all things!  The first verse of psalm 134 gives a loving shout-out to all the saints over the ages who have stood in and for God's Church "by night", during times of danger and risk.

With all the chaos, distraction and outright evil going on in the world around us, today is a good time to step back, consider & pray about the "big picture".  It's a picture in which God remains and returns triumphant over all other things, people, nations, etc...

Bless the Lord, and may the Lord bless you!  Stand in awe of the Lord!

       Psalm:  Psalm 98
      Epistle:  2 Thessalonians 3:1-13
      Gospel:  Luke 21:5-28

THEME FOR WORSHIP
With the Church year ending next Sunday, we’ve been focusing on Jesus’ return in glory, His second advent.  This clearly points to Jesus’ first coming and the season of Advent starting in two weeks.  Jesus’ first advent is the reason we look forward to His second, not in fear or dread, but with confidence and joy.

Of Jesus’ second advent, God’s prophet Malachi proclaims:  The great and awesome day of the LORD is coming!  But for you, will it be a day burning like an oven?  On that day, will you be set ablaze?  God proclaims:  The day is coming; what kind of day will it be, for you?

Thursday Psalms: Praise Like Crazy!

Blessed Thursday to each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, your Savior!

With all the turmoil and trouble around us and through our own struggles, it's really hard to be joyful and sing praise to God all the time.  Like waves crashing onto a pier, we often get hit with one thing after another.  Some waves are bigger and some are smaller, but it often seems like there is no end to them.  What are the waves in your life?

In Psalm 98, God encourages us to think differently.  God invites us to sing a new song, to make a joyful noise and to sing praises to Him.  We know these things, but how can we actually do them?

PSALM  98
Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things!
     His right hand and His holy arm have worked salvation for Him.
The Lord has made known His salvation;
     He has revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.
     All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
     break forth into joyous song, and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
     with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
     make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!
Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
     the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
     let the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for He comes to judge the earth.
     He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.

Our encouragement comes as God reminds us of what He has done, is doing and will do for you and for me.  Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things!

We get to sing because of what God has done.  Notice all the past-tense verbs in verses 1-3.  The best way to find God's encouragement during times of trouble is NOT to look at the trouble, but look back at what God has ALREADY done for you and me!

With God's undeniable grace and mercy in our minds, then we can join with all of God's creation in praising Him [vv 4-9].  Even the seas and the whales, the rivers and fishes, the hills and all the plants and animals, EVERYTHING God created praises the Creator!  All of these verbs are present tense, present action, including in verse nine where God comes to us.  You are God's child NOW; God loves you and lives in you!  Yes, He comes to judge the earth but He has already come and saved the earth in His Son Jesus Christ.  And, He will come again to judge a final time, but we do not fear God's final judgement.  All those who believe and confess Jesus, who has given His righteousness to them, will be saved from punishment and our bodies will be resurrected to eternal life in heaven.

So, don't look at the waves, look to your God, who has already saved you!  Then sing and dance and praise God like crazy.  Maybe people around you will think you are odd, and maybe somebody will become curious, ...and then you can tell them!

               Gospel:   Luke 20:27–40

THEME FOR WORSHIP

There’s a common understanding among people which grows as our years increase.  Things aren’t always what they appear to be.  Further investigation is often needed to make sense of the thing.  We’re often like Chicken Little, who is convinced “The sky is falling!” until the wise king teaches him things aren’t always what they appear to be.

In today’s Old Testament reading, Moses investigates a bush on fire and finds it to be something far different than what it appeared to be.  From this burning bush, YAHWEH, the great I AM sends Moses back to Egypt to bring God’s people out of slavery & bondage.

During the struggles of your life, God often seems to be something other than what you want or expect. Today God also speaks to you from this burning bush, proclaiming the good news of who He is and how much He loves you!

Thursday Psalms: God Raises You Up!

Blessed Thursday to each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, your Savior!

Reading this psalm we're reminded of the Lord's vast creation, which praises Him constantly.  Yes, even the waters, mountains & creeping things praise the Lord!

Psalm 148
Praise the Lord!  Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon, praise Him, all you shining stars!
Praise Him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord!  For He commanded and they were created.
And He established them forever and ever; He gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps,
       8 fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word!
       9 Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars!
      10 Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds!
      11 Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!
      12 Young men and maidens together, old men and children!
13 Let them praise the name of the Lordfor His name alone is exalted;
      His majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for His people, praise for all His saints,
      for the people of Israel who are near to Him.   Praise the Lord

When we hear "Praise the Lord!", we likely think of public worship services in which we sing and speak praises to God.  Thanks be to God, that we remain free to gather and worship Him!  There is no better hour of the week, that one sacred hour spent praising the Lord and receiving His gifts!  So our first take-away today is this:  God's calling you to go to church and worship Him, and often!

This certainly works for many of those mentioned in this psalm; kings, princes, young men and maidens, old men, children and all God's people.  But what about the others?  I don't ever recall seeing creeping things, livestock or other beasts gathering to worship and to praise the Lord!  My singing is not great, but I'd sound pretty good, next to a cow or crow!  What about the mountains, the trees and the stormy winds?  They praise the Lord by simply being what God created them to be.  This is our second take-away today:  God's calling you to worship Him in everyday life; following His will and caring for those around you!  Look for ways you can praise the Lord, without speaking or singing!

Lastly, in the final verse we find the greatest reason for our praise:  "He [the Lord] has raised up a horn for His people..."  In God's word, horns are emblems of power, dominion, glory, and fierceness, witnessed by the animals who use them as their chief means of attack and defense.  "Horn" is used as a metaphor for strength in Deuteronomy 33:17 and for honor in Job 16:15 & Lamentations 2:3, and are also symbols of royal dignity and power (Jeremiah 48:25 ; Zechariah 1:18 ; Daniel 8:24 ).  The expression "horn of salvation," applied to Jesus Christ, means a salvation of strength, or a strong Savior (Luke 1:69).

So this week join me in thanking & praising God, that He has "raised up" Jesus from death, to be your horn of  salvation!  Jesus gives to you His resurrection, so you and I will be raised up too!  God raises you up in the middle of troubles in this life, and God will raise you up after death to live forever with Him in heaven!  Live today in the joy of being Raised Up!

The Feast of All Saints

November 2, 2025

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

SCRIPTURE READINGS
  First Reading:  Revelation 7:9-17
             Psalm:  Psalm 149
            Epistle:  1 John 3:1-3
            Gospel:  Matthew 5:1-12

THEME FOR WORSHIP
Have you ever looked over a crowd of people and wondered about their stories, about what brought them together?  We might ask “Who are these people, and where did they come from?”  In today’s First Reading, a heavenly elder asked this question about the crowd gathered around Jesus’ throne, praising Him day and night.

In His “Beatitudes” sermon, Jesus climbs a mountain and looks out at the gathered crowd.  He sees them as lost sheep needing a Good Shepherd, and He teaches & gives them the way to eternal life.  Today, your great encouragement is this:  Jesus sees YOU in the crowd.  Jesus loves and cares for YOU!  Jesus makes YOU His saint!
