Pilgrim Worship Sunday April 27, 2025

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Second Sunday of Easter

April 27, 2025

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our Adult Bible study at 9:15 am, then our 10:30 am Worship service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

Here is information about this worship service:

SCRIPTURE READINGS
  First Reading:  Acts 5:12–32
             Psalm:  Psalm 148
            Epistle:  Revelation 1:4–18
            Gospel:  John 20:19–31

THEME FOR WORSHIP
During the weeks between Easter and Pentecost, the Church replaces the Old Testament readings with lessons from the book of Acts. Why, you may ask. Doing so draws our attention to the question “Is the mission and work of Jesus over, now that He is no longer here in the flesh?” The clear answer to this question is a resounding “No!”. Even though the Son of God is now bodily in heaven, it is still God who speaks to you, me and His Church at large.

Thursday Psalms: Enter God's House!

Today we find a delightful prayer in the first verses of Psalm 5.

Give ear to my words, O Lord;

       consider my groaning.

Give attention to the sound of my cry,

       my King and my God, for to You do I pray.

Lord, in the morning You hear my voice;

       in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for You and watch.

For You are not a God who delights in wickedness;

       evil may not dwell with You.

The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;

       You hate all evildoers.

You destroy those who speak lies;

       the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of Your steadfast love, will enter Your house.

       I will bow down toward Your holy temple in the fear of You.

Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies;

       make Your way straight before me.

At different times, all of us groan and cry out to the Lord.  Our pain, suffering and needs are many and constant.  Thank the Lord, who "gives ear" to all of your prayers, and not just "in the morning"!

This is a nice prayer for us, just a few days after our Easter celebrations of the Resurrection of our Lord.  God your heavenly Father showed you the abundance of His steadfast love, in that even though we are sinners, Christ died for us!  [Romans 5:8]  All who die in faith of Jesus Christ will enter the Lord's house and spend eternity in heaven with Him and all other saints!

That is the triumph and great news of Easter!

Pastor Mark

SCRIPTURE READINGS

   Gathered at tomb:   John 19:38-42

        Old Testament:   Job 19:23–27

                     Psalm:   Psalm 118:15–29

                    Epistle:   1 Corinthians 15:51–57

                    Gospel:   John 20:1–18

THEME FOR WORSHIP

This morning the Apostle John shares Mary Magdalene's Easter experiences at Jesus’ tomb, which started early, while it was still dark.  Soon we have disciples Peter & John racing to the tomb and walking back to their homes, not understanding what has happened.  Mary returns in tears and peeks inside.  Suddenly the entire trajectory of her life changed.

Today may be your first trip to Jesus’ tomb, or one of many return trips.  Will you head back to your home, not understanding and unchanged?  Or will you join Mary proclaiming, “I have seen the Lord”?

Good Friday  Worship

April 18, 2025

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

Here is information about this worship service:

 Readings
      Old Testament:   Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12
                   Psalm:   Psalm 22
                  Epistle:   Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:7-9
    Passion Gospel:   John 18 & 19

THEME FOR WORSHIP
Not much seems good for Jesus on this Friday.  Jesus is the main figure in this first great climax of world history.  God’s salvation plan to rescue His creation will be completed with Jesus hanging lifeless on the cross.  In the run-up to this moment, the world around Jesus simply doesn’t know what to do with Him.  So many people, including you & I deny, dis-believe, minimize, attack and ultimately kill Jesus.

Yet, despite all the temptations and attacks the devil throws at Jesus, He remains undeterred.  Jesus obediently & willingly presses forward to accomplish His Father’s will and pay for your salvation.  Because of Jesus, “good” is not nearly good enough to describe this Friday!

        Psalm: Psalm 118:19-29
       Epistle: Philippians 2:5-11
      Gospel: John 12:20-43

THEME FOR WORSHIP
This Sunday is both our beloved Palm Sunday, with its rollicking parade and The Sunday of the Passion with its grim betrayal, trial and execution of Jesus.  This Sunday Jesus enters Jerusalem for the final time and marches obediently to His blessed death.  In both cases, the hour has come!  Today this hour has come for the Jerusalem crowd, for Jesus and for the Jewish leaders who believed in Jesus and those who didn’t.  This hour has come for you and me, too.  Where does this hour find you?  Where will this hour take you?

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP: The Hand of the Lord Who Holds All Things

All things are in the hands of Jesus. There is no authority that is above Him, and He will continue to exercise that authority for us until the end of the age.  Salvation itself is in the hands of Jesus. As we have seen throughout this series, Jesus continues to use those hands for our good and, above all, for our salvation. He has given that authority to the church for the sake of making disciples by baptizing and teaching.

As we prepare to enter into Holy Week, we see the specific ways that those hands, into which the Father has given all things, have worked forgiveness, life, and salvation.

The Fifth Sunday in Lent

April 6, 2025

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

BIBLE READINGS
  Old Testament:  Isaiah 43:16-21
               Psalm:  Psalm 126
              Epistle:  Philippians 3:8-14
              Gospel:  Luke 20:9-20

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Can you name the only two parables which appear in all three Synoptic […not John] Gospels?  You choose wisely if you include The Parable of the Wicked Tenants from today’s Gospel reading.  In this important and well-known parable, Jesus tells the very people who will kill Him, that they will kill Him!  We can feel the tension and confrontation between Jesus & the Jewish rulers, which has been strengthening for many months.  This will reach the parable’s climax when the beloved Son is killed outside the vineyard on Good Friday’s cross.  There is much sin, judgement and condemnation in this text, all of which reminds us of our own arrogance and misuse of God’s gifts.  So where is the good news for you & me?
