Pilgrim Worship Sunday November 17, 2024

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The 26th Sunday after Pentecost

November 17,  2024

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our Adult Bible study at 9:15 am, then our 10:30 am Worship service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

Here is information about this worship service:

BIBLE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:  Daniel 12:1–3
               Psalm:  Psalm 16
              Epistle:  Hebrews 10:11–25
              Gospel:  Mark 13:1–13

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
Autumn and the coming of winter become a parable of approaching death.  We’re now in the Autumn of the Church Year, when the stark realism of the lectionary readings brings us face-to-face with our own mortality, with death itself and God’s coming judgement of sin.  We are living in the evening of this world; the day is far spent, and the shadows lengthen.
But now is not the time to retreat in fear or hunker down in despair.  Today, Jesus tells us just the opposite and promises the one who endures to the end will be saved.

Thursday Psalms: Your Inheritance

We are in the autumn season of the Church Year; our focus turns to the end of our lives and the end of the world.  We started November celebrating the Feast of All Saints and the final Sunday focusses our attention squarely on Jesus Christ's return.   Sunday's assigned Psalm forces you to consider your final day, and your eternal inheritance.

Psalm 16

Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;

        I have no good apart from You.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,

        in whom is all My delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;

        their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out

             or take their names on My lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;

        You hold my lot.

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

        indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;

        in the night also my heart instructs me.

I have set the Lord always before me;

        because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;

        my flesh also dwells secure.

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,

        or let Your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;

        in Your presence there is fullness of joy;

             at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

God has numbered your days on this earth, but your bodily death should neither frighten nor shake you.  Because Jesus sacrificed Himself on Calvary's cross, willingly taking the punishment for all of your sins, you will not be abandoned to hell as every human being deserves.  Rather, as a baptized child of God, you have a beautiful inheritance, to enjoy pleasures forevermore, at the right hand of Jesus in heaven!

Dear Father in heaven,
As I walk through many challenges and difficulties in my life, I often get discouraged.  When I turn away and set other things before me, I shake in fear and doubt.  Teach me to set You always before me.  Knowing You are at my right hand, keep me ever faithful and confident in the beautiful inheritance You have given to me, through Jesus Christ, Your Son and my Savior.  Amen.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mark

"For You, O LORD, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth."  Psalm 71:5

Thursday Psalms: Trust in THE Way!

Psalm 146 is our psalm for today, a beautiful anthem of praise, and a powerful call to trust in the Lord.  God calls us to face this challenging question:  Who do you trust?  To whom do you turn for comfort and salvation as you walk through days of suffering in this world?  This psalm reminds us to trust and hope in the Lord, who gives us His grace in our suffering.

Psalm 146

Praise the Lord!

        Praise the Lord, O my soul!

I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

        I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,

        in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.

When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;

        on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

        whose hope is in the Lord his God,

who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them,

        who keeps faith forever;

who executes justice for the oppressed,

        who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

          8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

        the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the sojourners;

        He upholds the widow and the fatherless,

               but the way of the wicked He brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations.

               Praise the Lord

Verses 5-9 in this psalm describe so many examples of God's grace, gifted to His beloved children, including you & me.  But this psalm also points us to John 14:6 where Jesus says: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life."  Jesus is the WAY through your suffering & hopelessness in this life!  Jesus is the WAY to eternal peace & joy in heaven!  Jesus is the TRUTH, who opens your blind eyes, who raises you up and makes you righteous!  Jesus is the LIFE, who remains always with you, comforts you, and gives you hope no matter what is going on in your life!  The truth of Jesus is the only way to eternal life!

I pray for you today, that this psalm and these trustworthy assurances from Jesus will lift you up and comfort you during the suffering and struggling times in your life.

O  Lord, teach us to always trust You, our Way, our Truth and our Life.  AMEN.

Peace in Christ,

Pilgrim Worship Sunday November 3, 2024

  Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Feast of All Saints

November 3,  2024

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our Adult Bible study at 9:15 am, then our 10:30 am Worship service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

Here is information about this worship service:

BIBLE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  First Reading:  Revelation 7:9–17
             Psalm:  Psalm 149
            Epistle:  1 John 3:1–3
            Gospel:  Matthew 5:1–12

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
So often we see the people around us in groups, in crowds.  Examples of this are especially obvious during the current elections.  Politicians so often pander and posture and even lie to groups of people in order to win them over to their side.  In His “Beatitudes” sermon, Jesus climbs a mountain and looks out at the gathered crowd.   But Jesus doesn’t see only a crowd of faceless people, He sees individual people in their life situations and pronounces His blessings on them and their needs.  What a great encouragement this is, that Jesus sees YOU in the crowd.  Jesus loves and cares for YOU!  Jesus makes YOU His saint!
