Thursday Psalms: Your Covenant with God

These verses of Psalm 50 aren't exactly uplifting.  Yes, we read that God is the perfection of beauty, but the rest of these verses speak of God's judgement on the earth and His people.  God comes, not in silence, but with a devouring fire and a mighty tempest!  Where is the Epiphany revelation about Jesus, your Savior?

PSALM  50:1-6

The Mighty One,

      speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,

      God shines forth.

Our God comes; He does not keep silence;

      before Him is a devouring fire, around Him a mighty tempest.

He calls to the heavens above

      and to the earth, that He may judge His people:

“Gather to Me my faithful ones,

      who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice!”

The heavens declare his righteousness, for God Himself is Judge!

In verse 5 God speaks to His people Israel, who live in a special relationship with Him, a covenant made & kept in place by the animal sacrifices God required.  But with any work of ours, the questions always creep in:  Did I sacrifice properly?  Was my work good enough?  Am I one of the faithful ones, who kept God's covenant well enough?  Unfortunately, we are unable to keep God's laws perfectly.  We all sin and fall far short of the glory of God.  All sin must be judged and punished, so left to ourselves, we are hopelessly doomed.

But, here is the good news for you!  God the Lord is both your Mighty Judge and your forgiving Savior!  God the Father sent His only Son Jesus to be the sinless & perfect sacrifice for all peoples' sins.  On the cross, Jesus fulfilled God's law and made a new covenant with us.  "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."  John 3:16

Because Jesus was faithful, He became your saving sacrifice, and He gathers YOU to Himself to live with Him now, and forever in heaven!  What a great covenant that is!

Peace in God alone,
