Pilgrim Worship Sunday September 29, 2024

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 29,  2024

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our Adult Bible study at 9:00 am, then our 10:00 am Worship service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

Here is information about this worship service:

BIBLE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:  Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29
               Psalm:  Psalm 104:27-35
              Epistle:  James 5:13-20
              Gospel:  Mark 9:38-50

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
It is election season; we’re bombarded by candidates, parties, platforms and campaigns.  Many important Biblical issues divide our communities with candidates lining up on each side of these issues.  The entire situation quickly becomes “us vs. them”, filled with great passion, even including violence & hatred.  Lord, have mercy.  Christ, have mercy.  Lord, have mercy.
Often, we read the first verse of today’s Gospel text and conclude John & the other disciples have this same boastful mindset.  But is that really what Jesus is teaching us in this text?

"For You, O LORD, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth."  Psalm 71:5

Thursday, September 26, 2024

Thursday Psalms: Sing to the LORD!

God created and cares for all things in this world; how should we consider Him?

Psalm 104:27-35

27 These all look to You,

       to give them their food in due season.

28 When You give it to them, they gather it up;

       when You open Your hand, they are filled with good things.

29 When You hide Your face, they are dismayed;

       when You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

30 When You send forth Your Spirit, they are created,

       and You renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

       may the Lord rejoice in His works,

32 who looks on the earth and it trembles,

       who touches the mountains and they smoke!

33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

       I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

34 May my meditation be pleasing to Him,

       for I rejoice in the Lord.

35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth,

       and let the wicked be no more!

    Bless the Lord, O my soul!

       Praise the Lord!

In these verses, "these'', "them" and "they" all refer to all that God has created, see verses 1-26 for beautiful descriptions of God's creation.  All created things look to God for their food, and all that is needed to sustain life.  When God provides abundantly, His creation "gathers it up", and when God "hides His face" all created things "are dismayed."   Verse 29b makes this very clear:  God has numbered the days of everything He has created.  All things live and die at God's will.  Verse 30 adds that all life is created, sustained and renewed by God's Holy Spirit.

Give thanks to God that He has given you faith in Him, not simply as Creator, but He has given you faith in His Son Jesus, your Redeemer and Savior!

O God, by Your grace and mercy, I will sing to the Lord as long as I live.  AMEN.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mark

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP TODAY
Each of us gets distracted by things nearly every day.  You’re especially vulnerable if you carry a mobile phone, a high-tech watch or keep your computer nearby.  There’s always somebody or some message waiting for our attention, to distract us from something we were doing.  Over 2000 years ago, Jesus’ disciples were distracted by their arguing & discussing with each other.  How does Jesus respond to their & our distractions?

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 8,  2024

BIBLE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
  Old Testament:  Isaiah 35:4-7a
               Psalm:  Psalm 146
              Epistle:  James 2:1-10, 14-18
              Gospel:  Mark 7:24-37

THEME FOR WORSHIP
In today’s Old Testament reading, God makes an awesome promise to His people.  God will come with vengeance on His enemies and with recompense for all who suffer.  Certainly, these verses prophecy Jesus’ Last-Day coming, but they also point to God’s Son coming to His creation in the fully human person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  In today’s Gospel reading, we see a crumb of this prophecy fulfilled, as Jesus gives recompense to a woman who is suffering.  But this isn’t a typical conversation and healing; it contains an unusual twist or two.

Thursday Psalms: Trust in the LORD!

This is election season; we're surrounded by countless voices and messages saying "Put your trust in me!"  We're told "Trust me with your vote and I will make your life better!".  So many people are promising to save you from "fill-in-the-blank".  But God tells us something clearly different in this psalm.

Psalm 146

Praise the Lord!

        Praise the Lord, O my soul!

I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

        I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

Put not your trust in princes,

        in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.

When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;

        on that very day his plans perish.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

        whose hope is in the Lord his God,

who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them,

        who keeps faith forever;

who executes justice for the oppressed,

        who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

          8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

        the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the sojourners;

        He upholds the widow and the fatherless,

               but the way of the wicked He brings to ruin.

10 The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations.

               Praise the Lord

Put not your trust in princes, or politicians or spouses or anyone.  Even the best of people who may love & care for us deeply will return to the earth.  Only the Lord your God can save you.

As we read all of the blessings the Lord is and does, one jumps out as the most remarkable and the greatest:  the Lord keeps faith forever!  God is faithful & true to all His promises made to you!  He will never leave you nor forsake you!  He forgives and removes your sins from you as far as the east is from the west!  Jesus Christ the Son of God has taken the punishment your sins deserve and promises you will live with Him in heaven forever!

The Lord will reign forever, your God!  Put your trust in Him always!
