Thursday Psalms: God's Time Is Forever!

This is the final 2023 edition of Thursday Psalms, as the turn of a new year is upon us. Our focus is on time; the year past with all of our experiences and the year ahead, full of expectations. These verses from Psalm 90 remind us of a couple of things. As we look back on 2023 and all our previous years, Moses reminds us that God has always been our protection and provider, from everlasting to everlasting, He is God!

Psalm 90   A Prayer of Moses, man of God.

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth,

      or ever You had formed the earth and the world,

             from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

You return man to dust

      and say, “Return, O children of man!”

For a thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday when it is past,

      or as a watch in the night.

You sweep them away as with a flood;

      they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning:

in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;

      in the evening it fades and withers.

For we are brought to an end by Your anger;

      by Your wrath we are dismayed.

You have set our iniquities before You,

      our secret sins in the light of Your presence.

For all our days pass away under Your wrath;

      we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

10 The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty;

      yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

11 Who considers the power of Your anger,

      and Your wrath according to the fear of You?

12 So teach us to number our days

      that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Moses’ prayer also reminds us of the difference between God’s time and ours: For a thousand years in Your sight are but as yesterday when it is past. In this you can find great encouragement in your suffering and struggles. When God promises to always be with you, He means more than just getting you through your current suffering. He means longer than even your life on this earth. God will be with you, and you with Him through all eternity!

The same thing applies to healing our bodies. When God promises to heal you, your current suffering is so temporary, compared to eternal life perfectly healed! The number of our suffering days here on earth is TINY compared to our days of eternal life!

So we can look forward to 2024, fully wise in God’s promises & healing for us. Godspeed in the New Year, whatever comes your way!
Peace in Christ,
Pastor Mark
