We're glad & thankful you've come here to watch our service and worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Lenten Wednesday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our 11 am Bible class.  In this class, we consider various signs of Jesus, which bear witness to Him.  The highlight of the day is our Vespers worship services at either 4pm or at 7pm.  We enjoyed a delicious soup dinner between these services, sharing good food and fellowship!  If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us for any or all of these great events next week!

SCRIPTURE READINGS

       First Reading:   Ezekiel 11:17-21
  Second Reading:  2 Corinthians 4:1–6
   Gospel Reading:  John 19:1-16

THEME FOR HOMILY & VESPERS SERVICE

Pontius Pilate, a witness to Christ, consented to order Jesus’ execution.  Pilate may wash his hands and proclaim his own innocence in the death of Jesus, but Pilate is guilty.  Pilate is caught between a rock and a hard place.  Instead of doing what is right, Pilate has Jesus’ flesh ripped, shredded, dressed in purple, and crowned with thorns.  His hard heart is complicit in the death of Christ.  While it may be an uncomfortable thought, Pilate’s failures make us examine our own complicity in the evil of others.  How have we deceived ourselves in proclaiming innocence?  How have we been pressured into allowing evil to occur?  Thanks be to God that our journey to the cross shows us Jesus’ forgiveness.

The Fifth Sunday in Lent

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our 10:30 am Worship Service.  Afterward, we gathered for food, conversations, and an adult Bible class, in which we're studying Revelation, one of the most fascinating books of the Bible.  If you'd like to watch a video of this Bible Study, please contact Pastor Mark.  We also have Sunday School for children of all ages, full of activities and teaching of God's love for them!

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY

   Old Testament:  Isaiah 43:16–21
                Psalm:  Psalm 126
               Epistle:  Philippians 3:8–14
               Gospel:  Luke 20:9–20

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP SUNDAY

In His Parable of the Wicked Tenants, Jesus tells the people including us, about Himself and His Church.  The vineyard represents the Israelite nation through history, and Jesus foretells its end along with the destruction of the Temple coming in 70 A.D.  Jesus has two audiences as He speaks, and we are His third.  Each audience responds very differently.  The scribes and chief priests respond in anger and desperation, as Jesus speaks against them, and we’ll explore why Jesus’ words were so pointed and specific toward them.  The crowd reacted completely differently, saying “Let these things not happen!”  Many of them understood the same things as the Jewish leaders, but God’s coming justice pierces them with fear and sadness.

How do you and I respond?  We’ll explore Jesus’ challenging words in verses 17 & 18, and will uncover the saving Gospel message which is rather hidden and not obvious.

THEME FOR HOMILY & VESPERS SERVICE

Barabbas was a heartless, brutal criminal, with anger in his heart and blood on his hands. Custom dictated that Pontius Pilate should release one prisoner at the feast of Passover. Pilate knows Jesus is innocent and tries to get the crowd to ask for Jesus’ release, but the crowd calls for Barabbas. The crowd condemns the innocent Jesus and demands that the guilty Barabbas receive a pardon. We are Barabbas. We are guilty and sinful and deserving of death. But we are also Barabbas in that Jesus takes our place, takes our punishment, and sets us free.
