Pilgrim Worship Sunday December 8, 2024

Domenico Ghirlandaio - Preaching of St John the Baptist

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The Second Sunday in Advent

December 8,  2024

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

This was another exciting Sunday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!  Once again, we had lots of great activities going on, starting with our Adult Bible study at 9:15 am, then our 10:30 am Worship service.  Afterward, we gathered for food and conversations, while the children enjoyed Sunday School.  These classes are full of activities and teaching, so the children learn how much God loves them!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

Here is information about this worship service:

BIBLE READINGS FOR SUNDAY
   Old Testament:  Malachi 3:1–7b
                Psalm:  Psalm 66:1–12
               Epistle:  Philippians 1:2–11
               Gospel:  Luke 3:1–20

OUR THEME FOR WORSHIP
This second Sunday in Advent continues with expectations of both our Lord’s first and second coming.  Luke’s gospel focuses on John the Baptizer, whose coming Malachi foretold in today’s Old Testament text.  Both readings highlight John’s preaching of repentance, preparing our hearts for the coming judgment.  So, we live today in expectation for and hope in the Messiah, who came to save us from our sins.

Pilgrim Worship Wednesday December 4, 2024

Pilgrim Lutheran Church

The First Wednesday in Advent

December 4,  2024

We're thankful you've come here to watch our service and to worship the one true God!

Today was our first of three Wednesday Advent worship services at Pilgrim Lutheran Church!

If you live in the Burton area, please consider joining us on Sunday mornings!  Anyone can watch our services live on Facebook or later on Pilgrim's website.

The theme and sermon message for this service are based on Psalm 112, especially verses 6-8. Consider reading also Psalm 111 as mentioned in the sermon.

THEME FOR WORSHIP
To be human is to know what it means to fear. The season of Advent helps us long for a different reality: one ruled by peace rather than fear. For the Son of God was born into our tribulation, despair, and fear not just to comfort us but to bring about an end to whatever terrifies us most. This is why one of Jesus’ common refrains is “Fear not.”

Thursday Psalms: Come and See!

These verses from Psalm 66 are well-chosen for reading during the season of Advent, especially in these earlier days.  This psalm opens with four verses calling us to join with all creation praising God.  This reading ends with seven verses describing the past goodness and blessings God has provided.  Near the middle, verse five is the perfect Advent invitation!

Psalm 66:1-12

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;

sing the glory of His name; give to Him glorious praise!

Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds!

        So great is Your power that Your enemies come cringing to You.

All the earth worships You and sings praises to You;

        they sing praises to Your name.”

Come and see what God has done:

        He is awesome in His deeds toward the children of man.

He turned the sea into dry land;

        they passed through the river on foot.

There did we rejoice in Him, who rules by His might forever,

        whose eyes keep watch on the nations - let not the rebellious exalt themselves.

Bless our God, O peoples;

        let the sound of His praise be heard,

who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip.

10 For you, O God, have tested us;

        You have tried us as silver is tried.

11 You brought us into the net;

        You laid a crushing burden on our backs;

12 You let men ride over our heads;

        we went through fire and through water;

               yet You have brought us out to a place of abundance.

Come and see what God has done!  This simple phrase summarizes these Advent days, preparing to celebrate the manger-birth of Jesus, Son of God born of Mary, fully human.  This phrase mirrors what the angels proclaimed to the shepherds on that first Christmas night when Jesus was born.  Come and see what God has done!

And what is it that God has done for you?  What awesome deed toward the children of man do we celebrate?  Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem's manger on the first Christmas became your Savior on Calvary's cross.  There Jesus completed His suffering and died for you, taking upon Himself all the punishment you deserve.  You are set free from the guilt & shame of your sins; confess them and they are forgiven!

That is as awesome as anything gets!  Come and see, Jesus has set you free!
